Something I've been manifesting this year is to do more ticketed shows. What I mean is, playing shows at dedicated music venues, not venues that have music. Part of that goal is to open for bigger name acts - something I used to do more of. Eventually, I want to do more ticketed shows at dedicated music venues and less of the three-hour, three-set shows I've been doing for years.
The universe must have heard me and I'm grateful it did. I was offered an opening/support slot for Eric Hutchinson at the Space Ballroom in Hamden CT. I vaguely remembered his name from years ago, but was never into his music. It was a good fit though, and I accepted the offer.
First off, let me tell you what a relief and huge difference it is to not have to load up a van with a PA, to not have to set up a PA at the venue, to not have to play three sets over the course of three hours, to not have to break down and load up a PA at the end of the night, and to not have to unload it again when I get home. Playing a true “music venue” with sound, an engineer, a stage, and lights is a real luxury of sorts!
Second, it's great to perform in front of a somewhat captive audience. The people in attendance bought tickets to watch performers play their songs. Sure, they mostly bought tickets for the headliner, and I as an opener, run the risk of not being what the audience is interested in. However, I have found almost every time I've opened for a bigger name act - from Kyle Cook (Matchbox Twenty) to Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), and many more - that the audience is appreciative of my songs. In turn, I am just so grateful to be there, happy to entertain.
I was excited about performing at this show. My allotted time was 30 minutes, so I crammed six songs into my set. Truth be told, I wish I had done five songs and spoke with the audience a little more. Lesson learned. Otherwise, it was great! The audience was fantastic, the atmosphere enthusiastic and welcoming. Eric's fans were some of the kindest people. I was truly fortunate to be part of that bill.
Eric was cool, too. We got to chat some about music, fatherhood, travel, etc. He was very kind and made me feel at home. It's nice to relate with a fellow traveler.
This was certainly a highlight of my summer!
